Dr. Emmanuelle Crost, Senior Research Scientist @ Quadram Institute Bioscience

Webinar Overview

The human gut harbours a diverse community of microbes collectively called the gut microbiota which play a key role on influencing host health. While metagenomic and metabolomic approaches are essential to identify microbial communities and microbes associated with health or disease, strain isolation is critical to advance our molecular understanding of their function at the mechanistic level and for the development of live biotherapeutic products (LBPs).

Isolation of bacteria by traditional plating methods can be a lengthy process. The use of single cell dispenser B.SIGHT™ has drastically shorten the process. However, when working with human faecal samples, additional factors must be considered in the experimental design to warrant success including sample storage, the requirement to work under strict anaerobic conditions, the enrichment steps and selection process. The webinar will address these practical considerations through chosen examples.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Emmanuelle Crost is a Senior Research Scientist at the Quadram Institute Bioscience in Norwich (UK) where she has been studying bacteria-host-diet interactions in the gut for the past 17 years.

Prior to her current position, she obtained a Master degree in Biochemistry in Lyon (France) and then did a PhD in Marseille (France) where she purified and characterised a bacteriocin produced by the gut bacterium Mediterraneibacter gnavus (formerly Ruminococcus gnavus) and active against the pathogen Clostridium perfringens.
